Parksville – Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition

March 17, 2009 Author: Mark

Every August, Parksville holds its world-famous Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition, which brings artists and professional sculptors together to create magnificent works of art from sand. Held at the Community Park in the centre of town, the competition takes place over three days, with most entrants spending up to 24 hours to complete their sculptures. In 2008, a beautiful space-themed sculpture called ‘Luney Landing’ won the $7,000 first-price in the team category. Over the past sevenĀ  years, over 430,000 visitors have come to watch the competition, many of whom are from other parts of the world.

The Parksville Beach Festival is held in conjunction with the competition, so there’s also a fireworks display, entertainment for kids, croquet tournaments, and beach volleyball. The sculptures remain in place until the end of August, so if you’re with a tour group, you can arrange to have lunch beside them, under a canopy tent. Provided by the Parksville Beach FestivalĀ  Society, the lunch includes sandwiches, fresh fruit, dessert, and beverages.
